Industrialisation of Software Development and Run/Production at Deutsche Bahn: How Does it In-fluence Quality and Cost?

Detlef D. Exner, CEO
DB Systel (D)

Since 2002, DB Systel has systematically applied production management principles to the design, development and production of its IT and TC services. This has required fundamental changes to the company's organisation, human resources and processes, geared to the following trends:

1. Changeover from a hierarchical to a process-oriented and on to a networked organisation, i.e. the organisation is constantly evolving and temporary teams play an increasingly important role.
2. Wide spectrums mean that work can be performed by virtual teams.
3. Mobility will affect up to 50% of all jobs. This also involves new workplace concepts and new working hours models.
4. Unified collaboration enables integrated job-sharing models
5. High degree of automation and industrialisation of IT development and production, so that up to 40% of all operational employees can be allocated to more demanding tasks.

The presentation describes the path leading up to these changes, the problems, the results and the procedures implemented by DB Systel to achieve the above objective.
